Platinum Trophies

The vast majority of games on PlayStation consoles since the PS3 feature Trophies. They are essentially digital rewards tied to your PlayStation account for completing certain in-game challenges. Alongside Bronze, Silver and Gold, some games will also include a Platinum Trophy which is automatically unlocked after completing all of the other trophy challenges.

Who creates the Trophies?

Game developers are responsible for setting up the Trophies in their games and their associated unlock criteria.
 

Does getting a Platinum Trophy mean I've got all trophies for a game?

Usually yes. In order to get the Platinum Trophy, you'll first have to unlock all Bronze, Silver and Gold Trophies in a game. There are some occasions where a base game will have a Platinum Trophy but additional Trophies will be added with DLC. These extra trophies don't usually count towards the Platinum Trophy but if you don't play the DLC, your completion will drop below 100% despite having the Platinum Trophy unlocked. Game developers who target hardcore completionists will sometimes release DLC with new Trophies in order to encourage gamers to buy the DLC to get back up to 100%.
 

Do I have to do everything in a game for the Platinum Trophy?

Most games don't actually require you to complete everything in the game for the Platinum Trophy, but some do. It's entirely up to the game developers.
 

Do all games have a Platinum Trophy?

No, some games are limited to Bronze, Silver and Gold Trophies only. A lot of newer games tend to include a Platinum now though.
 

Can I Platinum the same game multiple times?

You actually can. A number of games have been released on multiple consoles, each with their own unique Trophy lists. If you play the game on each console separately, you can Platinum it multiple times. Some games have Platinum stacks across regions too, so you could get a Platinum for the European version and the North American or Japanese version separately. I don't know exactly how to do this, but I don't think it's straight forward and requires you to purchase the game directly from the relevant region store.
 

Is there anything stopping me from getting a Platinum Trophy?

The Platinum Trophy can become unobtainable for a number of reasons;

• The game features online / multiplayer related Trophies, but the online servers have now been shut down.
• The game is bugged or broken and Trophies do not unlock when they're supposed to. This can sometimes be resolved by;
  • Deleting all saves and game data, reinstalling and restarting the game from scratch.
  • A patch by the developers, but these type of fixes often aren't seen as high priority by many devs.
• The game uses features which are no longer available on the console or device, for example utilising the NEAR feature of the PlayStation VITA. Any Trophies tied to the use of this functionality are now impossible.

Are Platinums easy?

It depends on the game. A lot of the games I've Platinum'd tend to be quite easy which is why I'm able to get through them so quickly, but there are some games out there with Platinum Trophies which are so difficult almost no one has unlocked them. Generally I stick to Single Player games and read into the difficulty and estimated time before I start something new.
 

Are Platinums time consuming?

They can be. It depends on the game and how the developers have set up the Trophies. There are some games which can take over 500 hours to Platinum and some you can do in under a minute.
 

What's The Point?

Personally, I enjoy trying out different games of all genres and completing the challenges they offer. One day I'll probably develop a video game and the experience from everything I've played will come in useful. I also think it's cool to have a historical record of which games I've played, how long they took and when I finished them. Ultimately my Platinum Trophies mean nothing to anyone but me, but looking at someone's Trophy list does give an indication into how dedicated or hardcore they are when it comes to gaming.
