Virtuous Western - PS5 Platinum Review

Take down enemies one bullet at a time in this fun wild west puzzle-platformer.

Virtuous Western is a unique puzzle game in the sense that you start each of the wild west themed levels with no bullets. Part of the solution requires picking up the bullets one by one and using them to defeat the enemies who may be in the way of the next bullet. Defeating all enemies without being killed yourself will complete the level. As you get through the levels more gameplay features are introduced including shooting explosive barrels, dropping blocks on enemies heads and throwing dynamite.

The controls are what you'd expect from a platformer with the direction buttons to move, including up and down to climb ladders, X to jump, Square to shoot and Circle to throw dynamite. Occasionally you can also use Triangle to enter/exit buildings which can allow you to teleport to higher levels of the terrain.

For the Platinum you'll need to complete 30 levels which includes the final boss and all other trophies should pop on the way in the 20-30 minutes it'll take to get through the game.

The Good

  • Colourful wild west themed pixel art level design.
  • Easy and fun puzzles to complete.
  • Each level only takes a minute or so to get through.
  • The PS4 and PS5 versions are bundled together offering two Platinums for one low price.

The Bad

  • Most of the levels are very straight forward and don't require too much problem solving.
  • It could have been longer.

Hardest Trophy

  • NEW SHERIFF - Complete all stages.

You'll need to play through 30 levels, the last of which being the final boss so ultimately this will be the last and therefore most difficult trophy to unlock. Thankfully none of the levels are particularly difficult or time consuming.

Helpful Tips / Bugs / Glitches / Exploits

You don't really need any exploits or tips as the game is fairly easy, but you can press X to jump which also allows you to jump over some of the enemy bullets if you time it right. You can also drop down ledges and quickly hold left or right to land on the ledge below which can help you get behind enemies to avoid their bullets.

Platinum Difficulty Rating - 2/10

2/10

A few of the levels can get a bit tricky and require a bit more precise timing but once you figure out the solution to each level, they're all pretty quick and easy.

Platinum Time - 20 Mins

The first time through on PS4 took me over 30 minutes but once I knew the game, I managed to get the Platinum in just under 20 minutes the second time on PS5. If you used a guide it could probably be done even quicker but I'd suggest just playing through on your own as it's a fun and short game.

Platinum Enjoyment Rating - 10/10

10/10
I really enjoyed working through to get the Platinum. The levels weren't too difficult and it was a lot of fun.

Overall Game Rating - 9/10

9/10
The graphics are really nice and the gameplay is smooth and fun. The levels are fairly repetitive but they're varied just enough to keep them slightly challenging and fun. My only negative point is I would have enjoyed a few more levels but I'd definitely recommend this game to everyone. Trophy hunters will enjoy the quick and easy Platinum but there's also a really cool game in there too.
