Ladders by POWGI - PS5 Platinum Review

Change one letter at a time to morph old words into new and win a free dad joke with each puzzle solved! Easy 30 minute Platinum with a guide.

For those who don't know, there are quite a lot of POWGI games in existence. They're mostly all text or word based puzzle games and some of them can be completed fairly quickly, especially with a guide. This one is no different. There are 50 puzzles you need to complete on the way to the Platinum trophy and a few additional ones for misc trophies.

The gameplay involves turning a word into another word, one changed letter at a time. So to use the first puzzle as an example, you'll start with the word COP and need to end up with CAR. COP becomes CAP, then CAP becomes CAR. Simple! They obviously get slightly more complicated as you go along, but the solutions are all fixed so a guide will get you to the end if you get stuck.

Overview

  • Release Date: 27th April, 2021
  • Publisher: Lightwood Games
  • Date Started: 27th April, 2021
  • Date Completed: 27th April, 2021
  • Version Played: Digital
  • Price: £6.49 (PS4 & PS5 Version Bundle)

The Good

  • It's quite easy and fun. You don't need to use a guide but it'll be quicker with one.
  • Some of the jokes (and trophy names) are quite clever and funny.
  • Features the same iconic soundtrack that POWGI gamers will have burnt into their ear drums.
  • Two Platinums for a single price.

The Bad

  • Once you've done a few levels you've essentially seen the whole game, but it's short and fun.
  • Not much variation in the graphics so I struggled to take 10 screenshots for this review - enjoy some jokes.

Hardest Trophy

  • Oh Grow Up! - It was harder this time, wasn't it?

POWGI games nearly always have a trophy where you have to write something inappropriate. This time you'll unlock it by writing the word PENIS which can be done on the last level (150). Besides that, nearly all of the trophies will pop naturally as you play through 50 levels.

Helpful Tips / Bugs / Glitches / Exploits

None required. Using a guide is the fastest way to completion.

Platinum Difficulty Rating - 1/10

It might take a bit more time without a guide, but its not really difficult at all and there are no penalties for struggling to find the correct answer right away.

Platinum Time - 20-30 Mins

If you really pushed yourself, this game could probably be completed in 10 minutes, but taking your time with a guide, you should easily have the Platinum in 30 mins. I completed it twice (PS4 & PS5) using Remote Play over my lunch hour at work.

Platinum Enjoyment Rating - 8/10

Quick and easy and I'm glad it only required 50 or so levels rather than the full 150 or it might have felt a bit more grindy, but the jokes more than make up for any time you spend solving the puzzles.

Overall Game Rating - 7/10

7/10
If you're not chasing a quick Platinum, there's a pretty fun brain-training puzzle game to be found here which will take you an hour or two to work your way through. Check out the other POWGI games if you're into this sort of thing as they're all similar and good fun.
